The Caribbean
Your Perfect Beach Experience
For those in search of sun, sand and surf, there are few places in the world with more options than the Caribbean. It may be surprising to learn, however, that the region is actually quite diverse. Some islands are tropical in nature, with lush rainforests and volcanic mountains, while others are more arid with desert-like brush and cacti. Some have nightlife. Some have black-sand beaches. Some have golf. What most have in common, though, are pristine beaches and turquoise water, the Caribbean's claim to fame. The key to a wonderful Caribbean experience? In a nutshell, choosing the right island (or islands) and the right accommodations for your personal interests.
Just the Facts
Best suited for:
Those who are interested in indigenous culture, pre-Columbian societies and colonial history. People who have already explored the world a bit, have a sense of adventure, and feel they can travel in developing countries. Outdoorsy types, wine enthusiasts, and foodies. Those interested in vibrant cities (Rio, Buenos Aires), gorgeous beaches (Brazil, Uruguay), and mountains (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina). People who can go with the flow and don't mind the occasional logistical inconvenience or slow service. It's a entire continent, so there is much to love for a variety of travelers.
When to go:
If you're like most, weather is probably on your mind. This is especially important in a region like the Caribbean, which has two distinct seasons - hurricane and non-hurricane.
Hurricane season officially runs from the beginning of June through the end of November, although many islanders will tell you it's really the three month period from August through October. Our advice - do not underestimate the risks, both financially and emotionally. Putting aside financial implications, how will you feel if you need to cancel and/or change plans at the last moment?
Winter season runs from December through April. From a weather perspective, this is the best time to go - warm temps, sunny skies and cool breezes. Note, however, that this also tends to be the most expensive time to visit the Caribbean.
The "shoulder" periods of mid-November to mid-December, and April through June generally offer a good balance between nice weather and value.
Finally, keep in mind that each individual island has its own weather patterns, so make sure to investigate prior to booking your trip.
In general, across the regions, Christmas/New Years can be challenging, as prices skyrocket, flights fill up, and hotels often have 7-14 night minimum stays. If you want the Caribbean over the holidays, plan early!
Accommodations:
You'll find all types of accommodations, including large full service resorts, all-inclusives, boutique beach options, condo-style properties, private villas, bed and breakfasts, and in some cases, charming inns. The Caribbean does lag the rest of the world a bit in its relative lack of rooms with private plunge pools, although slowly but surely more properties are adding this feature.
Dining:
Seafood is on practically every menu, and little wonder, as local fishermen ply the waters daily and supply the restaurants and hotel with the freshest fish imaginable. You'll also find local specialties like spiny lobster (in season), and conch. There is also an abundance of local fruit including pineapple, mango, guava and banana, to name a few. With the exception of a few resorts with hydroponic vegetable gardens, almost everything else is imported, but fortunately this means that many of your typical favorites such as steak, chicken and high quality vegetables are available throughout the year. In general, baked goods don't seem to be as good here; perhaps it's the weather or just a lack of a baking tradition. However, the French diaspora on St Barth somehow manages to make perfect baguettes and pain au chocolat! Wash it all down with a rum punch, Maitai, Piña colada, local brew or something imported from the cellar.
Special Activities:
Windsurfing in Aruba, New Year's Eve in St Barth, great golf on Nevis, Scuba diving in Bonaire, nightlife in St. Maarten, bonefishing in the Bahamas, sunset sail on St. Lucia, great music in Jamaica, sailing in the British Virgin Islands, salsa in Puerto Rico…the list goes on!

Why The Caribbean
Reasons to choose The Caribbean:
Blue blue waters, your choice of beach environment, good airlift / relatively short flight times from North America and Europe. Tons of choice in accommodations, a really laid back atmosphere, quintessential beach scenery.
Reasons to choose someplace else over The Caribbean:
If you are traveling during hurricane season. If you are looking for good value for money, there are better destinations. If you are looking to take a getaway during New Year's, the Carribbean is pricey and often booked up far in advance. If you are seeking pristine accommodations - many of the region's venerable resorts have not invested in modernization and are losing pace with competitors around the world in terms of overall quality and amenities. The northernmost islands can be cool in December and January.
