South Africa

An Experience Worthy of a Honeymoon

A honeymoon should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and few places in the world can offer the unique, memorable and romantic experiences that South Africa does. The new South Africa is a superb destination if you want to mix an "easy" safari with other sightseeing experiences. On the safari side, Kruger National Park provides some of the best game viewing opportunities in all of Africa, including the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Cape Buffalo, and Elephant), and it's relatively well developed and easy to reach. You can match Kruger with Cape Town, arguably one of the prettiest cities in the world, with all the amenities you could want on your honeymoon. Just outside of Cape Town you'll find a variety of other worthwhile attractions like beach resorts and vineyards. Overall, South Africa is a great destination to mix luxury, romance, and adventure to create memories for a lifetime.

Just the Facts

Best suited for:

Those who love wildlife and dramatic scenery. Outdoorsy types who appreciate a little luxury at night after being active during the day. Food and wine enthusiasts. Honeymoon couples who enjoy local culture, history and music. Those willing to spend the time, effort and money to seek out a "once in a lifetime" travel experience.

When to go:

The warmest months are December - February, where daytime temperatures average 80F/27C in Cape Town and 90F/32C in Kruger National Park. At this time it is rainier in the bush and slightly harder to spot animals as waterholes are abundant and foliage fills in. You'll likely still see the "Big 5", however. The winter season (July/August) can be cold - the southern coast and Cape Town is rainier with cool temperatures (highs of 62F / 17C). Kruger Park is quite dry during this time and ideal for spotting game, but early morning game drives can be chilly (low 40sF/5-7C), and warm layered clothing is recommended. Daytime temperatures still reach the 70sF/23C. The "best" time to visit will really depend on your priorities.

Accommodations:

Safari lodges come in many shapes and sizes. You'll find everything from hard-sided villas to East African-style tents; colonial decor to cutting edge contemporary; the simplest of simple to the pinnacle of luxury. In the cities, there are large, luxury hotels as well small, stylish boutique properties. In other parts of the country, you will find a variety of options, from charming seaside inns, to special eco-reserves, excellent spa resorts and even luxurious rail options!

Dining:

Food and wine are raised to an art form in South Africa. With a vast ocean and hectares of farmland, fresh ingredients are supplied daily. The seat of gourmet dining is arguably the Winelands, where eating is serious business. This area is famous for its wines - whites such as Sauvignon Blanc are particularly good; the local red varietal, Pinotage, is also excellent. For a little dining adventure, try game options such as ostrich or springbok, both red meats which are prepared with local seasonings and delicious sauces. In the cities, immigrants from around the world mean you can find just about any cuisine desired, from Thai to Portuguese.

Special Activities:

Wildlife viewing with an experienced game tracker, nature treks, spa activities, wine tasting, gourmet dining, whale and dolphin watching tours, shark cage diving, historical tours, theater, arts, nightlife, canoeing, luxury trains, local culture and much more!

Why South Africa

Reasons to choose South Africa:

Incredible luxury lodges and hotels coupled with terrific country infrastructure. Diversity of experience, including cities, coast, safari, history, shopping, outdoor sports and cultural activities. English is widely spoken. Also offers the opportunity to go on safari without taking malaria medications.

Reasons to choose someplace else over South Africa:

The best safari locations do require visitors take anti-malaria medication. Travel time from North America is rather long. Safari accommodations can be expensive. If you need a pristine "honeymoon" beach and world class beach resort you'll need to combine South Africa with Mozambique, Dubai or an Indian Ocean locale.
